His full name is John Levell Starks, born 08/10/65. According to the NBA, Starks stands 6'5" (1.96m), but I think that it is more like 6'3". He weighs 190lbs (86.2 kg). John and his wife Jacqueline have three children, John, Jr., Chelsea and Tiara. Starks enjoys listening to jazz and playing tennis, and is often seen on the golf course. He still lives in his hometown of Tulsa, Oklahoma in the off season.
Starks established the youth-oriented John Starks Foundation in 1994 to benefit children and students in Tulsa. On September 13, 1997, the John Starks Foundation held its "Third Annual John Starks All-Star Basketball Classic." The weekend included a charity sports memorabilia auction and banquet. Also, NBA players from all over the league performed to a sellout crowd at the Tulsa Convention Center. The Foundation is active in sponsoring fund-raising exhibitions, and charity tournaments featuring guests like Scottie Pippen and Patrick Ewing. Starks has hosted the American Airlines/John Starks Celebrity Golf Tournament benefiting Big Brothers and Big Sisters. He has also been involved with the Boys Brotherhood Republic in Manhattan's Lower East Side. Starks has won the Metlife Community Assistance Award and the "Good Guy Award" by the New York Press Photographer's Association. The John Starks Foundation is still active in its efforts, giving out 10 scholarships in 2004. Starks was honored for his work in a downtown parade in Tulsa on "John Starks Day" on July 4, 1994.
Starks has been active on non-NBA broadcasts as well, including guest spots on New York Undercover, Arli$$, and the Late Show with David Letterman. His big screen roles include cameos in Forget Paris starring Billy Crystal and Eddie starring Whoopi Goldberg.
John Starks was the 1997 Male Recipient of the Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Award - The Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards are given in recognition of America's premiere athletes who have excelled in their sport and have shown by their actions a desire to help others. Their outstanding personal involvement and success in their chosen work have made them heroes in the eyes of the world. Henry P. Iba would have been proud to be associated with the selections made in his name. Today's young men and women need positive role models with whom they can identify. All too often it is the negative news of athletes they hear in the media. However, in cities, towns and villages of America both our amateur and professional athletes alike are making worthwhile contributions of their time, talent and resources for the betterment of others. Henry Iba was an unparalleled success as a coach, a leader and a citizen. The Henry P. Iba Citizen Athlete Awards were created to recognize and honor one female and one male athlete who best exemplify the high degree of citizenship in the image of Henry P. Iba.
John Starks currently sits on the Boston Street Advisors' Board of Advisors.
